Apple renaming its desktop operating system

The next version of Apple’s desktop operating system will be named macOS. This replaces the long running OS X named systems over the last few years. macOS will be released in Autumn 2016 and looks to be a free upgrade. No doubt the free upgrade is in response to Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrades although it’s doubtful Apple will be so forceful trying to get you to install it!

So what benefits will macOS bring?

  • Siri – already in use on iPhones and AppleTVs. Siri brings voice command to the desktop – you’ll be able to use it to search the web, local files and open applications etc.
  • New file system – called APFS – this new file system will replace the bearded HFS system. This should improve performance and help use less disk space.
  • More continuity between devices – not only will you be able to open up a web browsing tab on Safari from iPhone, it looks like you’ll be able to copy and paste between devices too!

We’re looking forward to seeing the new version.
